Kenya Met Department Predicts Weekend Break in Rainfall—Coast to Remain Wet

Kenya Meteorological Department Director General David Gikungu has announced that most parts of the country should expect a temporary reduction in rainfall starting this weekend, offering a brief reprieve after days of intense downpours.

Speaking in an interview with TV47, Gikungu noted that moderate to low rainfall is expected across the country, except for the coastal region, which will continue to receive consistent showers.

"The systems indicate a decline in rainfall going into the weekend for most regions, though the coast and some parts of the Highlands East, including Nairobi, will still experience light rains," said Gikungu.

The Kenya Met boss explained that this dry spell is likely to last for about three days, after which a new wave of heavier rains is projected to begin.

Coastal Regions and Nairobi to Experience Continued Showers

While the majority of the country may enjoy drier weather, coastal areas and parts of Highlands East—which includes Nairobi—will remain damp. The ongoing wet conditions in these regions are consistent with weather patterns observed earlier in the season.

Gikungu also addressed public concerns about forecast reliability, emphasizing that the department leverages advanced technology to produce accurate and timely predictions.

Floods Continue to Wreak Havoc Despite Forecasted Lull

His remarks follow a period of persistent heavy rainfall that has led to widespread flooding and displacement of residents in several counties.

In Nairobi County, six lives were tragically lost on Monday, April 21, including a mother and her two children who were swept away by flash floods in Mathare. Over 500 families were displaced in informal settlements, county officials confirmed.

In Isiolo County, flash floods claimed more lives after a car carrying three people, including a Member of the County Assembly, was washed away by raging waters.

Heavy rains have battered regions such as the Central Highlands, Lake Victoria Basin, Western Kenya, Southeastern Lowlands, and parts of the Rift Valley and Northeastern Kenya.

Looking Ahead

Though a brief dry spell is on the horizon, the public is urged to remain alert and continue observing weather updates from the Met Department, as more rains are expected to resume soon.
