Government pathologist Dr. Johansen Oduor has confirmed that Kariobangi North MCA Joel Munuve died due to a blood clot and lack of sufficient oxygen—a medical condition known as pulmonary embolism.
The MCA passed away on Tuesday, April 22, while receiving treatment at a private hospital along Kiambu Road. He had reportedly collapsed earlier in the day while working at his ward office in Nairobi.
Controversy and Questions Surround His Sudden Demise
Munuve’s untimely death raised eyebrows across the political sphere, coming just three days after he publicly declared plans to collect signatures to impeach Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja.
Known for his independent stance in a politically charged environment, Munuve had built a reputation as a fierce watchdog for his constituents. His bold calls for accountability and transparency frequently put him at odds with the county administration.
Given the sensitive timing of his death, the postmortem was conducted under heightened scrutiny.
Heavy Forensic Oversight
According to the family’s legal representative, Danstan Omari, the postmortem involved seven pathologists and over 15 forensic officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
“Due to the controversy and public interest, several parties requested involvement. The team was led by Dr. Johansen Oduor and included representatives from the family, Nairobi County Government, and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino,” Omari told the press.
An earlier postmortem slated for Thursday, April 24, was postponed after additional parties, including the DCI, sought participation in the investigation.
Calls for Calm and Objective Investigation
Governor Sakaja, speaking on Citizen TV, cautioned against political speculation and emphasized the importance of a thorough investigation.
“Death is a serious matter and shouldn’t be politicized. Joel was passionate and firm in his convictions. Let’s allow investigations to reveal the truth,” he said.
Despite the tensions, Sakaja expressed respect for Munuve’s dedication to public service, particularly in holding the county government accountable.
A Vocal Advocate for Reform
Munuve had been one of the most outspoken members of the Nairobi County Assembly. His recent efforts included:
-
Demanding transparency in Sakaja’s “Dishi na County” school feeding program.
-
Petitioning national leaders, including President Ruto, over poor conditions at Mama Margaret Kenyatta Hospital.
-
Pushing for the hospital’s management to be reverted to the national government, positioning it as a satellite of Kenyatta National Hospital.
His death has left a leadership vacuum in Kariobangi North and triggered broader concerns about political accountability and safety in local governance.
