Millions in prize money await Alexander Munyao and Peres Jepchirchir following their exceptional victories at the London Marathon, where they emerged triumphant in their respective races.

Munyao secured the gold medal by defeating three-time champion Kenenisa Bekele with an impressive time of 2:04:01. Meanwhile, Jepchirchir stunned the world by breaking the women's world record with a remarkable time of 2:16:15.

The marathon's organizers allocate substantial rewards to the elite race winners, with each gold medalist set to pocket Ksh7.2 million (£44,000). Runner-ups and third-place finishers are also in line for significant cash prizes, with rewards of Ksh4 million (£24,000) and Ksh3 million (£18,000) respectively.

In the women's race, Jepchirchir led the pack, followed closely by Tigst Assefa of Ethiopia and Joyciline Jepkosgei of Kenya. Jepchirchir's world record-breaking performance earns her an additional Ksh16.6 million, bringing her total earnings to an impressive Ksh23 million.

Notably, Jepchirchir will also receive a Ksh5 million bonus locally, in accordance with President William Ruto's directive to reward athletes who break world records. This incentive, announced in June 2023 in honor of Faith Kipyegon's achievements, adds to the substantial rewards earned on the international stage.

The London Marathon organizers made history by offering equal prize money to all gold medalists in the elite races, emphasizing their commitment to equality and inclusion. This groundbreaking move aims to encourage more participants to join the prestigious event, which saw a record-breaking 50,000 runners take part in the April 21 edition.

Beyond the competitive races, the marathon showcased the diversity and creativity of its participants, with individuals donning costumes ranging from scientist outfits to game characters and cheerleader attire. This celebration of uniqueness further solidifies the London Marathon's status as a beacon of inclusivity and inspiration on the global stage.
