Kenya Power has provided alternative methods for its customers to purchase tokens following a potential cyberattack that has caused disruptions in major networks in Kenya by an anonymous Sudanese hacker group.
In response to the system hitch, Kenya Power advised its customers that they can still buy tokens through the company's banking halls or Airtel Money. Authorized banks and vendors also offer options for token purchases during the downtime.
The utility clarified that the service interruptions were caused by a hitch experienced by one of its network service providers. As a result, certain services, such as purchasing prepaid tokens through USSD code *977#, are temporarily unavailable.
Kenya Power is actively working with its service provider to restore the affected services as soon as possible. The company issued an apology to its customers for any inconvenience caused by the disruptions.
The advisory from Kenya Power came after reports emerged about a potential cyberattack by an anonymous Sudanese hacker group. The group claimed to have accessed the backend of the utility company and threatened to continue such attacks.
Despite officials from Kenya Power refuting claims of hacking, social media users expressed frustration over challenges in purchasing tokens, with transaction attempts resulting in technical difficulties.
In addition to Kenya Power, other government services, including e-Visa and e-Citizen, are also experiencing challenges due to the ongoing cyberattack concerns.
As Kenya Power and other affected entities work to resolve the cyberattack issues, customers are encouraged to utilize the provided alternative methods for token purchases until the regular services are fully restored.
