Rescuers rushed to the scene after a five‑storey residential hostel in the Satya Niketan neighbourhood of south‑west Delhi collapsed at about 13:30 local time (08:00 GMT) on Sunday.
Eyewitnesses said as many as 50 people were inside the building when it fell, and the incident left at least one person dead, two in critical condition and six rescued so far, according to local police reports cited by NDTV.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta visited the site, stating that an adjacent building had been evacuated as a precaution and that "every possible effort is being made to safely rescue those trapped".
A legislative assembly member reported that some trapped students were making calls from beneath the rubble, highlighting the urgency of the operation.
The hostel, known as Hostel Daze, was about 40 to 50 years old and had ongoing construction work in its basement, intended to increase income under a 100‑year lease held by the leaseholder.
A nearby shop owner told ANI that while the upper structure had been reinforced, the lower pillars were weak, a factor he suggested contributed to the collapse.
The National Students' Union of India called for an investigation and accountability, and Delhi Police are searching for the building's owner, as reported by the Times of India.
