Sifuna’s Linda Mwananchi battle enters a new phase

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and his Linda Mwananchi allies are racing against time to secure a political vehicle ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The movement’s attempt to register Linda Mwananchi as a political party has hit a major obstacle after the Registrar of Political Parties rejected the proposed name. The dispute has now moved to the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal, with Sifuna and his allies insisting that they are fighting to retain the political brand they have built.

Sifuna has sought to reassure supporters that the failure to secure the Linda Mwananchi name does not mean the movement is without a political party. Speaking at a Forum of Young Aspirants meeting at Ufungamano House, he said the group has several political options and is primarily fighting for ownership of its brand.

At least four existing parties are reportedly being considered as possible vehicles for the movement. One name now attracting attention is the Ukombozi People’s Party, which reports indicate could be a rebranded version of the United Democratic Party. However, leaders have not officially confirmed which party they will use.

The timing is becoming critical. The IEBC has set October 15, 2026 as the deadline for political parties intending to participate in the 2027 General Election to submit the names and specimen signatures of their authorised officials. Parties must also submit certified nomination rules by October 30.

That leaves Sifuna’s camp with limited time to settle on a political vehicle and complete the necessary legal requirements.

Why it matters: The Linda Mwananchi dispute is no longer simply about a name. It could determine how Sifuna and his allies organise, mobilise supporters and position themselves ahead of the 2027 elections.
