Funerals were held this week for Palestinian teenagers Omar al‑Naasan and Khalil Abu Alia, who were shot dead after Israeli settlers and soldiers entered the village of al‑Mughayyir, south of Nablus, in the occupied West Bank.
Mohammed Al‑Naasan, father of Omar, told the BBC: "We expect that when our sons walk in the street, they are likely to return to you injured or killed," a stark reflection of the climate of violence that has become commonplace in the area.
The Israeli military said its forces opened fire on "instigators of a violent riot" and said the incident is under review, while the United Nations reported that more than 80 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces or settlers in the territory since the start of the year.
The deaths occur amid a pattern of near‑daily attacks by Jewish settlers in al‑Mughayyir, adding to the mounting tension and insecurity faced by Palestinian communities in the West Bank.
