Metrotrans Tragedy: 2 Dead, Several Injured in Kiambu Road Crash as Calls for Road Safety Intensify

Two lives were lost and multiple people injured in a devastating crash involving a Metrotrans Sacco matatu on Kiambu Road early Monday morning. The accident, which happened near AAR Hospital, saw the vehicle veer off the road before overturning, causing chaos and shock among early commuters.

Emergency responders from AAR Hospital were among the first to arrive at the scene, where they assisted victims amid twisted metal and shattered glass. Eyewitnesses described a terrifying moment as the 14-seater PSV lost control, flipped onto its side, and skidded near the busy stretch leading to the DCI headquarters.

Photos and videos captured by bystanders show the matatu lying on its side, with the rear window missing, likely broken by passengers or good Samaritans trying to rescue those trapped inside.

"It was just a normal morning, and then we heard a loud bang. People were screaming and running," one witness told local media.

High-Risk Road Claims Lives Again

Though investigations are ongoing, the crash site sits along a notorious accident-prone stretch between Karura Forest and the DCI junction. This section of Kiambu Road is known for sharp bends, steep descents, and poor visibility—all dangerous combinations when mixed with speeding or reckless driving.

Authorities have repeatedly cautioned drivers to exercise extreme care in this area, but incidents continue to occur with alarming frequency.

Unrest and Delays Add to the Chaos

In a separate but possibly connected incident, residents near Ridgeways lit bonfires and staged demonstrations along the road, demanding better road infrastructure and more stringent traffic enforcement. While the cause of the protest is yet to be officially linked to the matatu crash, the resulting traffic gridlock added to commuter frustration.

Second Tragedy in 24 Hours

Shockingly, this accident follows another fatal crash less than a day earlier in Keroka, where a Nairobi-bound PSV collided with two motorcycles on a steep incline between Ichuni and Keroka town, leaving multiple fatalities. The matatu, having picked up passengers along the Kilgoris-Nyangusu route, lost control in similarly unclear circumstances.

Road Safety Concerns Mount

The twin incidents have once again brought attention to Kenya’s fragile road safety culture, especially concerning public service vehicles. Calls for stricter enforcement, PSV driver re-evaluations, and improved road signage have resurfaced in the wake of the tragedies.

As the nation mourns the victims and prays for the injured, the pressure is mounting on traffic authorities to act swiftly and decisively.
