The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has launched an official investigation into a deadly police shooting that occurred early Thursday in Angama Mara, Narok County, following a violent confrontation over a contested piece of land.
The incident, which unfolded in Lolkuruk village, reportedly left at least one person dead and seven others injured. However, locals claim the death toll could be higher, with some alleging that up to three individuals may have been fatally shot during the chaos.
What Happened at Angama Mara?
According to police, the violence erupted after a group of around 300 people stormed a disputed 800-acre parcel within the Angama Conservancy in the early hours of Wednesday, June 4. The group allegedly claimed that the land had been illegally acquired, and insisted they were the rightful owners.
Security officers, including personnel from the General Service Unit (GSU), Anti-Stock Theft Unit, Rapid Deployment Unit, and local police, were deployed to remove the group. Negotiations failed, and tensions escalated into live gunfire by Thursday morning.
IPOA Responds
In a statement issued Friday, IPOA Chairperson Issack Hassan confirmed that a Rapid Response Team had been dispatched to conduct a full investigation.
“The team will collect all relevant evidence to uncover the truth behind the tragic incident,” said Hassan. “Our priority is transparency, accountability, and justice for all parties involved.”
Hassan cited the authority’s mandate under Section 7(1)(a)(x) of the IPOA Act, which empowers IPOA to investigate deaths or serious injuries arising from police actions.
Land at the Centre of the Clash
The disputed land is reportedly linked to a former local politician and includes portions used by a well-known luxury safari lodge. The area has long been subject to disputes, but recent tensions appear to have reignited as local communities challenge historical ownership and alleged land grabbing.
Call for Calm and Accountability
While police maintain that lethal force was only used in response to an armed and hostile group, community members are demanding justice, claiming the response was excessive and avoidable.
Hassan urged residents to remain calm and promised that IPOA would release its findings to the public upon the conclusion of investigations.
“We are committed to an impartial, professional, and independent probe,” he added.
What’s Next?
If IPOA finds evidence of excessive force or police misconduct, the authority could recommend disciplinary actions, prosecutions, or compensation. As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting, and tensions remain high in the region.
