The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has reopened its Tax Amnesty Programme, offering Kenyans a chance to clear old tax penalties and interest without facing fines—but only until June 30, 2025.
The amnesty, introduced through the Tax Procedures (Amendment) Act, 2024, gives relief to taxpayers grappling with unpaid taxes and their accompanying penalties. This latest initiative follows a similar campaign held in 2023.
The government hopes to boost compliance while easing the financial burden on Kenyans looking to clean up their tax records.
🗓️ Key Dates and Eligibility
The tax amnesty window opened on December 27, 2024, and closes on June 30, 2025.
According to KRA, the amnesty targets two categories of taxpayers:
-
Those with penalties only (no principal tax) for periods up to December 31, 2023.
-
Those with unpaid principal taxes for the same period who fully pay the principal by June 30, 2025.
It also covers self-assessment or amended assessments raised after December 31, 2023, as long as the principal is paid before the deadline.
❗Note: Payment plans cannot extend past June 30, 2025. Any balances unpaid by then will not qualify for amnesty.
