Luxury SUVs become new weapon in Kenya’s drug trafficking routes

Drug traffickers in Kenya are increasingly turning to high-end SUVs to move narcotics, forcing security agencies to rethink the familiar profile of vehicles targeted on major highways.

The shift was exposed again after a road accident on the Nairobi-Nakuru highway led police to discover 241.5kg of suspected cannabis worth an estimated Sh7.2 million inside a Mazda CX-5.

The vehicle had collided with an oncoming trailer near Shinners Boys Senior School after its driver reportedly lost control while attempting to overtake. The driver abandoned the wreckage and fled.

What initially appeared to be an ordinary traffic accident quickly became a narcotics investigation.

Director of Criminal Investigations Amin Mohamed said officers processing the accident scene discovered six sacks of suspected cannabis inside the vehicle. Detectives from the National Anti-Narcotics Investigations Bureau in Nakuru have taken over the investigation and launched a search for the driver.

The case is part of a wider pattern.

Police have intercepted Toyota Prados, Land Cruisers, Nissan X-Trails, Mazda CX-5s and other SUVs carrying narcotics on routes connecting Nairobi with western Kenya, the Coast and northern border regions.

In Vihiga, police recently recovered cannabis valued at more than Sh3.5 million from a Toyota Prado reportedly travelling towards Nairobi. Another Prado was intercepted on the Eldoret-Nakuru highway carrying cannabis estimated at Sh2 million.

The National Crime Research Centre has previously documented the use of luxury vehicles alongside rental cars, motorcycles, buses, trucks, ambulances, hearses, boats and even aircraft in drug trafficking operations.

The attraction of SUVs is partly practical.

They have considerable cargo space, can travel quickly over long distances and cope with rough roads. Compartments can also be modified to conceal illegal cargo.

But there may be another advantage: perception.

Security experts cited in current reporting say traffickers may believe expensive private vehicles attract less suspicion at roadblocks than commercial trucks or vehicles traditionally associated with smuggling.

That creates a challenge for police.

Profiling particular categories of vehicles can work only until criminal networks understand the pattern. Once they do, they change vehicles, routes and methods.

Kenya's geography makes the problem particularly complicated.

Police have identified the Nairobi-Mombasa, Isiolo-Modogashe, Isiolo-Marsabit and Eldoret-Nakuru-Nairobi roads among important trafficking corridors. The Narok-Mai Mahiu route has also featured in previous seizures.

These roads connect border areas, agricultural regions and ports with Nairobi and other large consumer markets.

The changing tactics mean a vehicle's appearance may increasingly tell officers little about what it is carrying.

A Prado driven along a highway could be transporting a family, tourists or businesspeople. It could also have narcotics concealed inside.

That puts greater emphasis on intelligence-led policing rather than indiscriminately stopping vehicles because of their appearance.

Tips from members of the public have already played a role in several interceptions.

The latest crash also illustrates another risk.

A vehicle carrying hundreds of kilograms of illegal drugs can disappear into normal traffic until something goes wrong.

In this case, it was an accident that exposed the cargo.

The larger question for investigators is how many similar vehicles complete their journeys without attracting attention.
