A man has died at Pangani Police Station cells where he was booked after being unable to raise KSh 200 fine.
Robert Mureithi, on Friday, July 9, virtually appeared at Makadara Law Courts where he was slapped with KSh 200 fine or seven days in jail for violating curfew rules. The 30-year- old was, however, unable to raise the amount and was transferred to Pangani cells where he was to be processed to go to remand.
According to Starehe police boss Julius Kiragu as reported by the media, Mureithi collapsed in the cell and was found on the morning of Sunday, July 11, at 7 am.
Doctors called
Kiragu said the officer commanding the station alerted the doctors of the incident but the man had already died at the time of their arrival.
The tricenarian is suspected to have died following a scuffle among the inmates, an allegation that Kiragu denied. He was supposed to appear before the court again on Friday, July 16, when he was expected to be released.
The man’s remains were moved to City Mortuary for postmortem to establish the cause of his death. The process of tracing his family has commenced.
