The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has unveiled a new online platform that allows current and former students to access, download and verify their Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) certificates digitally.
The move marks a significant shift from the traditional paper-based system and is expected to make it easier for certificate holders to retrieve their academic records for employment, further studies and other official purposes.
To guide users through the new service, KNEC on Tuesday released a step-by-step process for accessing the digital certificates through its e-Certificate portal.
Applicants must first visit the online portal and register by selecting the Applicant (Student/Alumni) option. During registration, users are required to provide a valid email address.
Once the email has been submitted, the system sends a One-Time Password (OTP), which remains valid for 10 minutes and must be entered to complete the verification process.
Applicants who already have an account can sign in using their registered email address and request a fresh OTP to access their dashboard.
After logging in, users are required to complete their profile by providing personal details, including their citizenship, full name, date of birth, phone number and national identification number where applicable.
To generate the certificate, applicants must select the Generate e-Certificate option before entering their KCSE index number, the examination type and the year they sat the examination.
According to KNEC, the platform supports KCSE certificates issued between 1989 and 2025.
The system automatically checks the information provided against KNEC records. Once the details are successfully verified, applicants are prompted to pay a processing fee of KSh1,500 using a mobile money payment platform.
After the payment has been confirmed, the digital certificate is generated and becomes available for download in PDF format.
Beyond downloading certificates, the platform also introduces an online verification service designed to help graduates securely share their academic credentials.
Users can generate a verification report and send it directly to employers, universities or other institutions by entering the recipient's details and choosing their preferred delivery method, including email.
The digital platform is expected to simplify certificate retrieval, reduce paperwork and improve the speed and security of academic credential verification.
As more public services move online, the new system also aims to make it easier for employers and learning institutions to verify applicants' qualifications while reducing the risk of document fraud.
