Africa's fastest man, Ferdinand Omanyala, narrowly lost to American Noah Lyles in the 100 meters at the Wanda Diamond League meeting in Paris on Friday night.
Omanyala led for most of the race, but Lyles surged ahead in the final 30 meters to win in 9.97 seconds. Omanyala finished second in 9.98 seconds, and Botswana's Letsile Tebogo was third in 10.05 seconds.
The race was Omanyala's third Diamond League appearance of the season. He finished third in Rabat, Morocco, on May 13, and second in Florence, Italy, on May 20.
Omanyala is now preparing for the World Athletics Championships, which will be held in Budapest, Hungary, from August 15-24.
In other events at the Paris Diamond League, Faith Kipyegon of Kenya broke the world record in the 5000 meters. Kipyegon won the race in 14:05.20, breaking the previous record of 14:06.62 set by Letesenbet Gidey of Ethiopia in June 2021.
The Paris Diamond League was the final Diamond League meet before the World Championships. The next Diamond League meet will be held in Oslo, Norway, on June 16.
