Detectives at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) arrested the 28-year-old mother of a three-year-old baby whose eyes were gouged out in Kisii County.
The woman was apprehended after visiting baby Sagini at the hospital on Sunday, December, 18.
"When I left my child was well, but now he is blind besides undergoing a lot of torture," the mother stated.
The mother was lined to be arraigned in court on Monday, December 19. Additionally, she will be charged with parental neglect.
Reports also indicated that the mother abandoned the child with his father and a grandmother after an argument ensued, prior to the incident.
She allegedly left to work as a bar attendant in a nearby town. According to the detectives, three people, including a form three student, were also grilled for 10 hours on Sunday, December 18, evening.
The suspects were released after hours of investigations. Detectives also visited the home of the young boy to assess it for traces of evidence.
"They took a metal rod I use to fix my radio to check if there are any blood stains," noted one of the family members.
The bizarre incident sent chills across the village as most feared sending their children far from their homes.
Baby Sagini was kidnapped while fetching water at a nearby stream. His brother found him dumped in a maize plantation in excruciating pain with his eyes gouged out.
According to the Kisii Eye Hospital doctors, the young boy will be blind for the rest of his eyes. They also expressed fear about discharging the boy from the hospital as the safety of his home is uncertain.
"We should be able to discharge the boy anytime from now but we can not until we are sure where we are discharging the child to," stated one of the doctors.
Following the incident, the Kisii County Governor, Simba Arati, vowed to pay the child's school fees, among other bills.
