The hopes of 45,000 students who sat the 2020 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) exams done in March 2021 to get full scholarships for secondary education have been dashed.
Only 9000 students among 54,000 who applied for the Elimu Scholarship Program were selected to benefit from the scholarship.
This scholarship targets students who hail from humble backgrounds from 110 sub-counties and 15 urban centers countrywide. A student must have scored above 280 marks in order to qualify for this government scholarship.
The 9000 beneficiaries’ school fees will be catered for in full for the entire period of their school education. The monies will be remitted to their respective public high school accounts where they are set to join.
Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha is set to unveil the names of the beneficiaries on Jul 22, 2021, at the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD).
In addition to the fees, the beneficiaries will be provided with school uniforms, learning materials, and personal effects for the entire period of their secondary education.
Transport to and from school during opening, closing, and midterm in addition to a stipend of Ksh500 as pocket money per term will also be provided.
The scholarship is part of the Kenyan Government’s agenda being implemented to boost retention in upper primary schools and transition to secondary schools of students from humble and vulnerable backgrounds.
Students with special needs and disabilities (physical, hearing and visual impairments, autism, albinism among others) were also put under consideration during the selection process.
Those from families affected by HIV and Aids and other chronic diseases with adverse effects were also offered a chance to benefit from this government incentive.
The program was open to those that have suffered from abuse, neglect and orphans who cannot afford to support their education further.
