A couple was attacked and robbed after their car crashed in Kikuyu, Kiambu County, early Thursday morning, police said. One of the victims was later sexually assaulted by a group of attackers.

The incident happened at about 5:30 a.m. near the KARLO Forest-Renguti Junction in the Kerwa area.

According to investigators at Kikuyu Police Station, the couple was on its way home when the driver lost control of the vehicle. The car left the road and ended up in a ditch on a nearby farm.

The crash soon turned into a violent attack.

Police said two unidentified men approached the couple and appeared to offer help. The men then allegedly threatened the victims with knives and took their mobile phones.

The attackers also allegedly forced the victims to disclose their M-Pesa PINs before withdrawing an undisclosed amount of money from their mobile wallets.

Police said one of the victims was then gang-raped during the attack. Both victims were injured.

Members of the public later came to their aid and took them to P.C.E.A. Kikuyu Hospital, where they were receiving treatment.

Detectives have since launched a manhunt for the suspects.

A team led by the Kikuyu Sub-County Criminal Investigations Officer visited the scene on Thursday. The team included the officer in charge of crime, traffic officers and crime-scene investigators from Kiambu.

Investigators also recovered several empty alcohol bottles from inside the crashed vehicle. The bottles were taken as exhibits as detectives continue to piece together what happened.

Police said efforts to identify and arrest the suspects are continuing.

No arrests had been reported by the time of the latest update.
