Former UDA Secretary General Cleophas Malala now says his removal from the ruling party wasn’t about disloyalty—it was about demanding accountability.
Speaking publicly on the matter, Malala revealed that his effort to track President William Ruto’s 2022 campaign promises led to his ouster. He said he created a document listing all the pledges made during the campaigns, hoping to monitor progress.
But instead of support, he says, he met resistance.
“When I brought up our promises and reminded the party leadership of what we stood for, I was branded a mole,” Malala said.
Ruto’s Vision — Forgotten?
According to Malala, he tried to remind the president and party leadership of their founding philosophy—empowering hustlers at the bottom of the economic pyramid.
“We listed the guiding principles and said, Mr. President, this was your foundation. But we were viewed as people who had given up on him,” he said.
Soon after, he was shown the door.
“Blessing in Disguise”
Malala says he has no regrets. Now the deputy party leader of Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), he believes leaving UDA helped him stay true to his principles.
“I would have sunk with the entire ship,” he said. “It was a blessing in disguise.”
His comments come as criticism grows within Kenya Kwanza, with many accusing the government of drifting away from its promises of economic inclusion and equity.
A Broken System?
Malala didn’t hold back on Parliament either. He called the current house “the most confused” since independence.
“We don’t know who’s the government, who’s the opposition. Parliament has lost direction,” he said.
He added that the lack of clear leadership from both the executive and legislature has left the country in a “state of confusion.”
Malala was officially removed from his UDA role in August 2024, during a National Executive Council meeting chaired by Cecily Mbarire.
“The appointment of Cleophas Malala as interim Secretary General is hereby revoked,” the party stated at the time.
Political Fallout
Just a month ago, Malala called for the entire government to be dissolved, following a court ruling that overturned a panel decision against his ally, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
His latest remarks will likely stir further debate within Kenya Kwanza, especially among those still waiting to see the president’s election promises fulfilled.
