Lagat steps aside as pressure mounts on police to account for influencer's death
The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has summoned Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Lagat to answer questions in the ongoing investigation into the death of teacher and social media influencer Albert Ojwang’.
Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, IPOA Chairperson Isaack Hassan confirmed that the summons had been issued after the authority found “sufficient basis” to question Lagat. He’s expected to appear before IPOA investigators and give a formal statement.
Ojwang died in police custody on June 7, shortly after his arrest at Central Police Station in Nairobi. His death has triggered national outrage, protests, and growing calls for transparency and justice.
Lagat, who filed the initial complaint that led to Ojwang’s arrest, accused him of spreading false and malicious information online. Now, he’s at the center of a broader investigation into possible police misconduct.
On June 16, Lagat announced that he was stepping aside to allow investigations to proceed. “I have opted to step aside in good and conscious thought of my role and responsibilities,” he said in a public statement.
IPOA said the investigation is active and expanding. Investigators have requested mobile phone records from service providers to trace communication between key suspects. The authority also confirmed it had seized CCTV footage from Central Police Station and sent biological samples to the Government Chemist for analysis.
In a related move, IPOA has secured extended custody of the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) at Central Police Station, Samson Talam, who is also under investigation.
The probe is expected to determine whether Ojwang’s death was caused by negligence, abuse of power, or criminal actions by police officers.
Meanwhile, public pressure continues to build, with many Kenyans demanding swift accountability and reform in the police service.
