Several police officers are feared dead following a devastating road accident involving a police Land Cruiser and a trailer at Matisi, along the Bungoma-Webuye Highway.

Eyewitness accounts indicate the two vehicles collided head-on, leaving the police vehicle mangled beyond recognition. The impact of the crash was so severe that some officers are believed to have died instantly. Images from the scene show a body, presumed to be that of a police officer, covered with a white cloth near the wreckage.

The police vehicle reportedly belongs to the Bungoma Railway Police Station, though it's not yet clear whether all officers involved were from the same unit. Preliminary reports suggest at least three officers were recovered from the wreckage, but police are yet to issue an official casualty report.

Emergency responders, including police, local volunteers, and medics, arrived at the scene quickly to assist in rescue and recovery efforts. Authorities have since cleared the area, though traffic disruption was reported as responders worked to remove debris from the busy highway.

This incident adds to a troubling pattern of recent road tragedies involving law enforcement personnel. In a separate case near Thika, Corporal James Mutunga of the Northern Corridor Transit Patrol Unit was fatally hit by a speeding vehicle while aiding in the clearance of a stalled tuktuk. The same vehicle went on to injure three pedestrians before coming to a stop.

Another fatal crash occurred in Salgaa along the Nakuru-Eldoret Highway, where teenagers driving a car owned by a police officer collided with a bus, leading to their deaths.

A Worsening Road Safety Crisis

These incidents come amid alarming road safety statistics. Between January and March 2025, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) reported 1,139 road crash fatalities, a marginal decrease from 1,166 deaths recorded during the same period in 2024.

Pedestrians remain the most affected group, accounting for 420 deaths, followed by motorcyclists (301), passengers (189), pillion passengers (130), drivers (83), and pedal cyclists (16).

While some accidents result from mechanical failures or poor road conditions, many are attributed to reckless driving, speeding, and failure to observe basic traffic laws. In past cases, even police officers have been implicated in traffic violations, including driving under the influence, raising concerns about accountability within the service.

Government’s Response

In response, NTSA and law enforcement have intensified a nationwide road safety awareness campaign, focusing on enforcing traffic laws, improving road user education, and clamping down on unroadworthy vehicles. These efforts aim to reduce the country’s persistently high rates of traffic-related injuries and deaths.

As investigations continue into the Bungoma-Webuye crash, families await confirmation and answers. The tragedy is a sobering reminder of the fragile line between duty and danger, especially for those tasked with keeping the rest of the country safe.
