Kajiado West Member of Parliament George Sunkuyia has been arrested by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) on allegations of forging his Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) certificate.
The arrest took place on Tuesday, May 27, and EACC officials confirmed that the legislator is currently undergoing processing before being presented in court to face charges related to the alleged forgery.
Sunkuyia, who was first elected to Parliament in 2017 and retained his seat in 2022 under the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), is the latest high-profile individual to be caught up in a growing crackdown on forged academic credentials within public service.
Prior to his parliamentary career, he served as a councillor for the Olkejuado County Council from 2002 to 2013, and later as a Member of the County Assembly (MCA) for Keekonyokie Ward from 2013 to 2017.
His arrest follows several other similar cases involving public officials. In February 2025, Juja MP George Koimburi was charged in a Kiambu court with forging both his KCSE and university certificates. He pleaded not guilty and was released on Ksh 200,000 cash bail.
In contrast, Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi was acquitted in June 2024 after a court ruled that the prosecution failed to prove allegations of academic forgery, citing irregular investigations.
The EACC has ramped up its efforts in recent years to root out individuals using fraudulent academic documents to secure public positions. In January 2025, five civil servants were arraigned over similar allegations, underlining the Commission’s resolve to uphold integrity in public office.
Sunkuyia’s court appearance is expected to further spotlight the issue and raise questions about the vetting process for elected leaders.
