Former U.S. President Joe Biden’s prostate cancer has spread to his bones and is causing significant pain, his son Hunter Biden has revealed in an emotional interview with the BBC.
Hunter Biden made the disclosure during an interview with BBC Newsnight broadcast on Friday, August 7, 2026, as he spoke about his father’s health and the impact of the illness on the Biden family.
“The cancer has spread, metastasized into his bones and further,” Hunter said, describing the condition as “very painful and very debilitating.”
Hunter became emotional while discussing his 83-year-old father, saying it was difficult for the family to watch him deal with the illness.
“The only thing that I’d say about my dad, about his health right now, is I wish he would complain more, because it’s not good,” Hunter said.
Biden’s cancer was diagnosed in May 2025, shortly after he left the White House. His office said at the time that he had an aggressive form of prostate cancer that had already spread to his bones.
More recent reporting has described the cancer as Stage 4 and hormone-sensitive. Biden underwent radiation treatment and has been receiving hormone therapy. Earlier reports indicated that he was responding to treatment, although the disease is considered incurable once it has metastasized.
Despite his condition, Biden has continued to make public appearances and speak on issues he considers important. Hunter said his father remains committed to public life and continues to believe strongly in the United States.
“He’s still doing his thing,” Hunter said. “He so believes in this country.”
Biden's health became a major political issue during his presidency, particularly during the 2024 election campaign, when concerns about his age and fitness intensified following his debate performance against Donald Trump. Biden subsequently ended his bid for re-election.
Hunter also discussed other aspects of his father's presidency and his decision to pardon him before leaving office. He acknowledged in the BBC interview that the pardon was damaging to his father's legacy and was not good for America, while defending the family's decision to stand by one another.
Biden is also preparing to publish a memoir, Promise Me, America, following the 2026 U.S. midterm elections.
The latest information about Biden’s cancer progression comes from his son’s account. Neither Biden nor his medical team has, in the latest reports reviewed, publicly issued a separate medical statement confirming the additional details described by Hunter.
