Absa Bank Kenya has announced a KES65 million investment in the 2026 Magical Kenya Open, extending a long-running corporate partnership that has made the lender the tournament’s presenting sponsor for the 15th consecutive year.
The 57th edition of the tournament, which forms part of the DP World Tour, will be staged from February 19 to 22 at Karen Country Club in Nairobi. It is among Africa’s most prominent international golf events, drawing elite players, global television coverage and significant attention from the tourism industry.
Under the sponsorship arrangement, KES40 million will go to Kenya Open Golf Limited (KOGL) to support the organisation and delivery of the event. A further KES25 million will be deployed by Absa on marketing, branding and hospitality activities linked to the tournament. The bank said the investment reflects its continued focus on sports development and the promotion of Kenya’s international profile.
Absa Bank Kenya’s chief executive, Abdi Mohamed, said the sponsorship aligns with the lender’s broader brand strategy, which emphasises long-term commitment and excellence. He said sport provides a platform for telling Kenyan success stories on a global stage, while also supporting local communities and talent.
The Magical Kenya Open has increasingly been positioned by organisers and government officials as a strategic asset for sports tourism. As part of the DP World Tour calendar, the event attracts visitors, broadcasters and sponsors, with spillover effects for the hospitality, transport and services sectors.
Evans Achoki, secretary for administration at the State Department of Sports, said Absa’s sustained backing had helped entrench the tournament’s status internationally. He described the partnership as an example of how private-sector investment in sport can contribute to economic growth and national branding.
The chairman of Kenya Open Golf Limited, Patrick Obath, also highlighted the role of corporate sponsorship in sustaining world-class events. He said long-term partnerships had enabled the tournament to evolve from a largely exclusive competition into a broader family and lifestyle event, while still meeting the standards required of an international tour.
This year’s tournament has attracted a field of 144 golfers from 25 countries, including 10 Kenyan professionals and amateurs. Among the local players expected to compete are Njoroge Kibugu, Dismas Indiza and Greg Snow. The total prize purse stands at KES348.3 million, or about USD5 million, placing it among the richest golf tournaments on the continent.
As part of its sponsorship, Absa will also support the “Beat the Pro” challenge, an initiative that allows junior golfers to compete alongside professionals in a closest-to-the-pin contest. Winners will receive fully funded junior bank accounts worth KES50,000, a programme the bank says is designed to promote early financial inclusion and youth development.
Absa Bank Kenya, which is listed on the Nairobi Securities Exchange, is one of the country’s largest financial institutions, with operations spanning retail, corporate and institutional banking, as well as asset management. Its continued investment in the Magical Kenya Open underscores the growing intersection between corporate sponsorship, sport and economic strategy in Kenya.
