Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader Raila Odinga dismissed reports that he has been waiting for an endorsement from President Uhuru Kenyatta for the 2022 General Elections.
Speaking during an interview on Thursday, July 8, Odinga pointed out that he has not been waiting for Uhuru’s endorsement because he doesn’t need it.
Raila stated he is his own man and the only thing he would need from President Kenyatta would be his one vote at the ballot.
The ODM leader was speaking during an interview with Radio Citizen when he stated that Uhuru was his competitor in the 2013 and 2017 elections and they have an agreement solely based on the handshake.
“Uhuru has not stated that he will endorse anyone and I also don’t want him to endorse me. You know Uhuru was my competitor so how will he endorse me?” Odinga posed.
“We came together and we have had discussions he told me the problems he had in his first term in office. But I haven’t said I want an endorsement from him the only thing I want is his vote when I decide to vie,” he added.
In July 2020, details emerged that President Uhuru’s Jubilee Party was working towards an election deal with ODM who was their bitter rivals in the last two polls.
ODM chairman John Mbadi was quoted by the Standard stating the two parties were already building consensus for the deal, which he stated will be signed in the run-up to the next polls.
Mbadi stated that the party was willing to form a new outfit with jubilee and other political players.
“It is no secret that there will be a new outfit. Parties are formed to win power and govern. They are not charitable organizations. Towards the 2022 elections, political visibility and strength will be achieved only if we strategize properly,” Mbadi stated.
“We must practice what we preach. Ours is a long haul and not for short-term gains but people should not be shocked if ODM insiders get government appointments,” he added.
Siaya Senator James Orengo hinted at a political alliance between the president and Odinga.
He stated that the two have been working together and would continue to do so even in future.
“There is a high possibility that the two top leaders will form a political alliance ahead of 2022 because they are closely working together to stabilize the country,” Orengo stated.
Orengo stated that the duo would ensure Kenyans get accountable leadership to steer the country ahead.
