OL KALOU, Nyandarua – As voters head to the polls in the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election, one of the names on the ballot is Samuel Muchina Nyagah, the candidate representing the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
Although he is a relatively new face in elective politics at the national level, Muchina has quickly become one of the most closely watched candidates in the contest, carrying the hopes of the Kenya Kwanza coalition to retain a seat regarded as politically significant in the Mt. Kenya region.
A Surprise Winner in UDA Primaries
Samuel Muchina Nyagah emerged as UDA's flagbearer after winning a highly competitive party nomination held in May 2026.
The nomination attracted 10 aspirants, underscoring the strategic importance of the Ol Kalou seat. Muchina secured 3,221 votes, narrowly defeating his closest challenger, George Wambugu Kanuri, who garnered 3,077 votes. He was later presented with the UDA nomination certificate by the party's National Elections Board.
The victory positioned him as the ruling party's choice in a by-election that has drawn national attention.
Campaign Built on the BETA Agenda
Since clinching the UDA ticket, Muchina has centered his campaign on supporting President William Ruto's Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).
Following his clearance by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), he told supporters that his journey to Parliament had begun and pledged to seek every vote in order to continue implementing the government's development agenda for Ol Kalou.
His campaign has focused on grassroots meetings across the constituency, with particular emphasis on agriculture, youth employment, road infrastructure, water projects and economic empowerment for small businesses—issues that resonate strongly with residents of the largely agricultural constituency.
A Candidate with Limited Public Profile
Unlike many of his rivals, Samuel Muchina Nyagah has maintained a relatively low national public profile before entering the race.
As of polling day, there is little publicly available verified information regarding his professional background, previous public offices or business interests from independent official sources. Most publicly documented information about him relates to his victory in the UDA nominations and his subsequent campaign activities.
This has made the campaign itself the primary avenue through which voters have come to know him.
High-Stakes Contest
The Ol Kalou parliamentary seat became vacant following the death of David Njuguna Kiaraho, who had represented the constituency since 2013.
Today's by-election is widely viewed as more than a local contest. Political observers see it as a test of the ruling UDA's influence in the Mt. Kenya region against opposition forces seeking to make inroads ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Should he win, Muchina will become the new Member of Parliament for Ol Kalou, tasked with representing a constituency whose economy is heavily driven by dairy farming, crop farming and small-scale trade.
As voters cast their ballots, Samuel Muchina Nyagah is asking residents to back his promise of continuity, arguing that working closely with the national government will help accelerate development projects and improve livelihoods across Ol Kalou.
