A grieving family in Kaloleni, Kilifi County, is calling for justice after their 14-year-old daughter died under unclear circumstances shortly after receiving an injection at a private hospital in Bombolulu on October 7, 2025.
The girl, identified by relatives as Muthoni, had gone to the hospital seeking treatment for a persistent cough. Family members allege that a medic administered an antibiotic injection, after which her condition quickly deteriorated.
According to witnesses, the teenager began frothing at the nose while travelling home to Mariakani, and was pronounced dead soon after.
“She was fine when she left the house that morning,” said a distraught relative. “We just want to know what really happened to her after that injection.”
A post-mortem examination carried out on October 8 at the Kilifi County Referral Hospital failed to establish the exact cause of death. Medical samples — including foam collected from the body — have since been forwarded to the Government Chemist for forensic analysis.
Police have launched investigations to determine whether medical negligence or an adverse drug reaction may have contributed to the teenager’s sudden death.
Local leaders and residents have joined the family in demanding transparency, urging health authorities to fast-track the inquiry and take action if malpractice is confirmed.
“No parent should lose a child because of negligence or carelessness,” said one community elder during a family meeting in Kaloleni.
The private hospital at the centre of the case has not yet issued an official statement. Health officials in Kilifi have promised to release a report once the forensic tests are complete.
As the investigation continues, Muthoni’s family says they will not rest until they get answers — and accountability — for a life cut tragically short.
