A Murang’a county ward representative and three others have been charged in a Nairobi court over what prosecutors say was a staged abduction aimed at shielding Juja MP George Koimburi from facing land fraud charges.

Grace Nduta Wairimu, the MCA for Kanyenya-ini Ward, stood alongside Peter Kiratu Mbari, David Macharia Gatana and Cyrus Kieru Muhia before Milimani Chief Magistrate Ben Mark Ekhubi on Tuesday. All four denied charges of conspiracy to defeat justice, giving false information to a public officer, and publishing false content under the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act.

The court granted each accused person release on a cash bail of Sh300,000, with a condition to provide three verifiable contacts.

Warrants for Missing Co-Accused

While the four stood trial, three others — including Koimburi himself — failed to appear.

Magistrate Ekhubi issued arrest warrants for the Juja MP, along with two other suspects identified as Peter (6th accused) and Njuguna alias Njugush (7th accused), stating their absence had not been sufficiently explained.

The magistrate directed police to execute the warrants immediately.

The Alleged Plot

The case stems from an incident on 25 May 2025, when Koimburi claimed to have been abducted by masked assailants after attending a church service in the Mugutha area of Juja. He later issued a press statement from Karen Hospital, alleging torture and disappearance — claims that prosecutors now say were fabricated.

Investigators believe the abduction was orchestrated to block Koimburi’s court appearance, where he was due to answer to land fraud charges, following a directive by the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The prosecution alleges that Nduta and her co-accused not only conspired to stage the abduction but also misled law enforcement officers and circulated false information online to support the narrative.

Next Steps

The case, registered under Criminal Reference CR: 145/143/2025 and Court File CF: E376/2023, is set for mention on 5 August.

The court has yet to confirm whether Koimburi and the other absconders will appear voluntarily or be apprehended before then. Meanwhile, the accused who were present maintain their innocence, and their legal teams have promised full cooperation with the court process.
