Dagoretti North MP Beatrice Elachi has taken the internet by storm following a searing, impassioned prayer she delivered during the 2025 National Prayer Breakfast on Wednesday, an event attended by President William Ruto, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, and key national leaders.

In a moment that stood out from the typically formal event, Elachi broke from convention, using her over seven-minute intercession to confront what she described as the moral and governance decay at the heart of Kenya’s political class.

“We have compromised ourselves… we have left our country, our young people in helplessness, in gambling, in pornography,” she prayed with visible emotion.

A National Confession

Elachi framed her prayer as a confession on behalf of Parliament and the broader political establishment. She decried the culture of corruption, consumerism, and neglect of Kenya’s youth, pleading with God for forgiveness and renewal.

“Father, we have corrupted ourselves. We have become lustful for materialism and forgotten You are the giver of all wealth,” she said.

Her words, echoing across social and mainstream media, tapped into a growing public frustration with Kenya’s political system. The MP rebuked her colleagues for passing self-serving laws and enabling mismanagement of public resources, painting a picture of a country hijacked by greed and impunity.

“We misuse our own resources and then we lament… Father, forgive us that today we might change.”

Calling Out Hypocrisy and Absenteeism

In a pointed section of her prayer, Elachi challenged public officials who she accused of sabotaging the president’s agenda out of self-interest. She condemned a culture of political complacency and absentee leadership, declaring:

“We refuse that spirit of ‘what is in it for me?’”

She further lamented the moral void among leaders, blaming them for failing to model values and discipline to younger generations, leading to societal rebellion and confusion. “Today they have rebelled. We are now crying as parents,” she prayed.

A Plea for National Restoration

Elachi didn’t stop at leadership failures—she addressed the nation’s tribal politics, violence during elections, and the exploitation of national resources for foreign benefit.

“We changed the laws, we compromised our gates, our airports, our waters, our boundaries,” she said, describing Kenya’s sovereignty as auctioned for short-term gain.

In a symbolic moment, she lifted up Nairobi as the “Jerusalem of Kenya,” praying for its renewal, and for Kenya’s natural wealth to become a blessing rather than a burden.

A Prayer That Hit Home

Elachi closed with a blessing for President Ruto and his administration, urging that they govern in line with God's will and not for personal interest.

“Let us serve according to the will of God,” she prayed to a now-silent room.

Her boldness and honesty have struck a chord online, with many Kenyans—regardless of political affiliation—sharing clips of the prayer and praising her courage to speak truth to power in a room full of it.

In a political landscape often dominated by posturing and platitudes, Elachi’s words may have just ignited a new level of accountability—and prayerful introspection—across the country.
