The Kenyan government has strongly condemned the shoe-throwing incident targeting President William Ruto during a public rally in Migori County, terming it a disgraceful act of disrespect toward the Presidency.

In a statement released on Monday, May 5, Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura denounced the incident and called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of those involved.

"Fellow Kenyans, the government strongly condemns the incident that occurred in Kehancha, Migori County. We must respect the institution of the Presidency," Mwaura said.
He further added, “Those behind this shameful act must be apprehended. What values are we teaching our children? Let us be patriotic and maintain peace.”

The attack occurred on Sunday evening while President Ruto was addressing residents in Kehancha. Videos circulated on social media captured the moment a shoe was thrown from the crowd toward the President, prompting him to momentarily pause his speech.

The incident has raised concerns over the breach in presidential security, prompting reactions from various political leaders. While President Ruto continued with his scheduled events the following day, he did not directly comment on the attack, though visibly heightened security measures were in place.

Authorities confirmed that three individuals were arrested shortly after the incident. However, sources within the police say the key suspect—the person who actually threw the shoe—has not yet been apprehended.

Law enforcement agencies, including the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), are now involved in the investigation. Preliminary findings suggest the act was premeditated and orchestrated in advance of the President’s arrival in the region.

The identities of the detained individuals have not been released to the public, and investigations are ongoing. Meanwhile, President Ruto continues his three-day tour of Migori County as scheduled.
