The body lies in repose inside the Domus Santa Marta, the papal residence where Francis chose to live during his pontificate, shunning the traditional Apostolic Palace in favor of modesty and closeness to others.

In accordance with his personal wishes, Pope Francis declined the customary triple-layered coffin—typically made of cypress, lead, and oak—opting instead for a simpler approach that reflected the values he championed in life: humility, simplicity, and accessibility.

The Vatican confirmed that Pope Francis passed away on April 21, 2025, due to a stroke followed by irreversible heart failure.
A medical statement noted that the Pope had a complex health history, including acute respiratory issues, bilateral pneumonia, multiple bronchiectases, high blood pressure, and Type II diabetes.
“His death was confirmed through electrocardiographic thanatography. I hereby declare that the causes of death, to the best of my knowledge and judgment, are as stated above,” said Vatican medical officer Arcangeli.
