Pope Francis is now lying in state at the Chapel of Santa Marta in Vatican City, where mourners are gathering to pay their last respects to the beloved pontiff.

Photos released by Vatican Media show the late Pope resting peacefully in a plain wooden casket, dressed in traditional red papal vestments and his bishop’s miter, with a rosary placed gently in his hands. Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Vatican Secretary of State, was seen offering prayers beside him.

The body lies in repose inside the Domus Santa Marta, the papal residence where Francis chose to live during his pontificate, shunning the traditional Apostolic Palace in favor of modesty and closeness to others.

A Final Act of Humility

In accordance with his personal wishes, Pope Francis declined the customary triple-layered coffin—typically made of cypress, lead, and oak—opting instead for a simpler approach that reflected the values he championed in life: humility, simplicity, and accessibility.

The image of the rosary in his hands speaks to his deep Marian devotion and personal piety, embodying the Catholic hope in eternal life and the communion of saints.

Cause of Death and Health History

The Vatican confirmed that Pope Francis passed away on April 21, 2025, due to a stroke followed by irreversible heart failure.

A medical statement noted that the Pope had a complex health history, including acute respiratory issues, bilateral pneumonia, multiple bronchiectases, high blood pressure, and Type II diabetes.

“His death was confirmed through electrocardiographic thanatography. I hereby declare that the causes of death, to the best of my knowledge and judgment, are as stated above,” said Vatican medical officer Arcangeli.

A Legacy of Compassion and Reform

Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, Pope Francis served as the 266th Pope of the Roman Catholic Church and was the first from the Americas, the Southern Hemisphere, and the Jesuit order.

Throughout his papacy, he was widely respected for championing social justice, interfaith dialogue, environmental stewardship, and compassion for the marginalized.

His final resting place and funeral arrangements are expected to reflect his life’s message—one rooted in mercy, humility, and service.
