In a Lagos‑area court, 46‑year‑old Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode was arraigned on several counts, including causing death by dangerous driving and operating a vehicle without a valid national licence.
Kayode, who was behind the wheel of a Lexus SUV carrying boxer Anthony Joshua, denied the allegations.
According to court testimony, the group was travelling to visit Joshua’s father in Ogun State in December when Kayode attempted to overtake a moving truck.
The manoeuvre caused the SUV to lose control and strike a stationary lorry loaded with soy beans, killing Joshua’s personal trainer Latif Ayodele and strength coach Sina Ghami.
A second defendant, 35‑year‑old Abubakar Adamu, the driver of the stationary lorry, faces a charge of obstructing the free flow of traffic, which he also denies.
Inspector Christopher Ajayi Taiwo of the Ogun State Motor Traffic Division reported that debris and soy beans were found at the scene, and that only a logbook, painkillers and an energy drink were recovered from the wrecked Lexus.
Police have not yet taken a statement from Joshua, and his lawyer was told that efforts to obtain one were ongoing but hindered by the lack of a contact number. After the accident, the champion posted a tribute to his fallen teammates on social media, describing the loss as "tough for me" and expressing sympathy for their families.
