Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, described by the White House as President Donald Trump's senior negotiators, are scheduled to arrive in Kyiv on Sunday after a three‑hour meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Saturday.
The discussion, held behind closed doors at the Kremlin, was praised by Putin adviser Yuri Ushakov as "constructive" and "extremely frank", noting that it went beyond a simple exchange of views to include economic issues and potential large‑scale Russian‑American projects, as well as an acknowledgement of recent Russian military advances in the combat zone.
In a separate statement, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he was prepared for a "substantive conversation" and highlighted a three‑day mutual cease‑fire on strikes against each other's capitals that had been agreed by both leaders.
Travel arrangements remain uncertain because Ukraine's airspace has been closed since the full‑scale invasion began in February 2022, raising questions about how the envoys will reach Kyiv from Moscow.
The meeting comes amid intensified aerial attacks on both sides; Russia controls roughly one‑fifth of Ukrainian territory seized in 2022, while Ukraine reports difficulty repelling ballistic missile attacks due to a shortage of interceptor missiles and continues to target Russian economic infrastructure, particularly oil installations. An announcement on any concrete steps is expected in the coming weeks.
