Kenya’s national football team, the Harambee Stars, were given a red-carpet reception at State House, Nairobi, on Tuesday. The event, hosted by President William Ruto, marked the team’s return to continental competition after qualifying for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN).

The celebration had all the flair of a state occasion. Trumpets rang out as the national anthem played, with President Ruto standing at attention alongside senior officials and invited guests. Moments later, the players, dressed in sharp black and dark-blue suits, filed into the arena in step, led by their head coach, Benni McCarthy.

A song composed in their honour played in the background as the team walked past queue barriers, evoking the mood of a national parade. At the dais, each player stepped forward to greet the President with a handshake and brief words of encouragement.

Behind them, a giant screen displayed their names and portraits, ensuring every player received his moment in the spotlight.

“This team has rekindled hope and shown what determination can achieve,” President Ruto said in his remarks. “You have given Kenyans a reason to dream again.”

The ceremony concluded with a State luncheon prepared for the players. Guests described the mood as jubilant but also symbolic of a nation yearning for footballing revival.

Kenya has struggled to make a mark in regional competitions in recent years, but qualification for CHAN has renewed belief among supporters. For many, the State House reception was not only about sport but also about pride, unity, and possibility.
