President William Ruto departs for Japan this evening, marking his 14th overseas trip of the year, as he attends the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9) in Yokohama. The summit runs from 20 to 22 August 2025 and carries the theme “Co-create innovative solutions with Africa.”
The visit comes amid a record-level partnership: Japan has invested over KSh 600 billion in Kenya—the largest such aid for any African nation. The summit offers a platform to bolster economic ties through trade, investment, and shared development projects.
President Ruto arrives with a clear agenda in mind. He plans to spotlight Kenya’s major infrastructure plans—such as the expansion of Mombasa Port, its access road, the Dongo Kundu Special Economic Zone, and urban transport enhancements in Nairobi. Agriculture, forestry, climate adaptation, and water infrastructure are also high on the list.
He will also call for deeper unity across the continent, championing the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) as a key driver for inclusive growth. He plans to urge the removal of trade barriers and push for stronger Japanese investment in strategic sectors.
Beyond the conference floor, President Ruto will meet Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba and will receive a state welcome at the Imperial Palace from Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako. These ceremonial gestures underscore the ceremonial and strategic weight of the journey.
TICAD is co-hosted by Japan alongside the United Nations, World Bank, and African Union Commission. This year’s iteration will feature discussions on city-focused urban growth and investment, including sessions led by the World Bank on urbanisation and Japanese corporate role in Africa’s future.
Why It Matters
Kenya’s active presence at TICAD underscores its ambitions not only as an economic hub in East Africa but also as a voice for continental unity and innovation. With infrastructure and integration at the heart of the agenda, the trip signals Nairobi’s commitment to projecting Kenya into the future as a strong partner in Africa’s evolving global role.
