President William Ruto has proclaimed Friday, May 10, as a national day of remembrance.

Addressing a gathering in Kajiado on Wednesday, the President dedicated the day to commemorate the lives lost and those affected by the recent floods.

"Friday, May 10, 2024, a day set to remember those that have been adversely affected by the ravages of climate change. Let us use the day to work towards improving our environment," an insider at State House revealed, quoting the President.

President Ruto emphasized that the day would be marked by nationwide tree-planting initiatives aimed at mitigating climate change effects.

According to Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura, the latest situation report indicates 75 individuals still missing, with 174 sustaining critical injuries and 47,000 households displaced.

Nairobi leads with the highest number of affected individuals at 164,000, followed by Nyanza region (40,000) and the Eastern region (5,957).

In response, the government has deployed various resources, including the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) and National Youth Service (NYS), for search and rescue operations. Additionally, National Government Administrative Officers (NGAO) are mobilized to assist in relocating residents to safer areas.

To alleviate the suffering, President Ruto announced compensation of Ksh10,000 for each of the over 40,000 displaced households to secure temporary shelter. Plans for the construction of 20,000 affordable houses were also unveiled.

In light of the ongoing crisis, the President postponed the reopening of schools to Monday, March 13, allowing time for comprehensive assessments of flood impacts on educational institutions and families living in affected areas.
