The morning of Monday, February 12, brought devastating news to Kenya and the global athletics community as they learned about the untimely death of marathoner Kelvin Kiptum, following a fatal road accident on the Eldoret-Kaptagat route.

A police report revealed the grim details of the accident, stating that the vehicle Kiptum was driving veered off the road and plunged into a ditch, instantly claiming the lives of both Kiptum and his coach, Rwandan national Gervais Hakizimana. A female passenger, identified as Sharon Chepkurui Kosgei, survived the crash but sustained severe injuries and was promptly rushed to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital for treatment.

According to the police report, Kiptum lost control of the vehicle, leading to the tragic outcome. The vehicle traveled approximately 60 meters in the ditch before colliding with a large tree, resulting in fatal consequences for Kiptum and Hakizimana.

As the world mourned Kiptum's loss, details emerged about the intense preparations he underwent in the weeks leading up to the fatal accident. These preparations included the rigorous process his world record in the Chicago Marathon last year underwent before being ratified, as well as his training regimen for the upcoming Rotterdam Marathon scheduled for April.

In October of the previous year, Kiptum made history by becoming the first person to complete a marathon in under 2 hours and 1 minute during the Chicago Marathon, clocking an astonishing time of 2:00:35. His record surpassed that of renowned marathoner Eliud Kipchoge, solidifying his status as the fastest marathoner globally.

Last week, the World Athletics officially ratified Kiptum's record after subjecting him to various procedures, including doping tests, to ensure compliance with regulations. These rigorous tests are standard practice to verify that athletes did not utilize banned substances to gain an unfair advantage.

The ratification process also involved scrutiny of factors such as doping control and shoe compliance, ensuring that Kiptum's achievement met all necessary criteria.

In addition to the ratification process, Kiptum was deeply immersed in intensive training for the upcoming Rotterdam Marathon, where he was anticipated to compete against Eliud Kipchoge. His coach, Hakizimana, disclosed details of Kiptum's rigorous training regimen, which included covering distances ranging from 250 to 300 kilometers per week.

Despite concerns about the intensity of his training, Hakizimana emphasized Kiptum's dedication and strength, highlighting the meticulous approach the athlete took towards his preparation.

As the world mourns the loss of this exceptional athlete, his legacy as a record-breaking marathoner and his dedication to his craft will be remembered for years to come.
